Frequently asked questions

Knowledge base about the Invisalign® method

Learn more about Invisalign® treatment at the Proste Zęby Clinic!

Is Invisalign® treatment available worldwide? Where is it most popular?

Invisalign® treatment is directly available in over 45 countries, including most European countries, the USA, Canada, China, Japan and the Asia-Pacific countries, the Middle East, Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region.

Are there any dietary restrictions during Invisalign® treatment?

No. Unlike traditional wires and brackets, you can eat anything during Invisalign® treatment, because the aligners are removed before eating and drinking. This also makes it easier to brush and floss your teeth after every meal and maintain proper oral hygiene.

How many patients have been treated with the Invisalign® method? How many years has this method been used worldwide?

Align Technology, Inc., the manufacturer of Invisalign® aligners, was founded in 1997. Since then, nearly 22 million patients from around the world have undergone orthodontic treatment with the Invisalign® system.

How often should the aligners be worn?

Patients should wear the aligners all the time, except during meals and when brushing and flossing their teeth. It is recommended to wear the aligners for 22 hours a day.

What are Invisalign® aligners made of and what do they look like?

The invisible aligners in the Invisalign® system are made of medical-grade SmartTrack® material. This material has been patented by Align and is a huge advantage of this treatment method over other aligner systems. In addition, studies have shown that SmartTrack® material is non-toxic, unlike other, less thoroughly tested materials used in aligners. The aligners are tailored to the specific patient and fit their teeth exactly.

Do the aligners affect the way you speak?

Most patients do not report any changes in the way they speak. However, as with traditional braces, at the beginning of treatment there is a period of getting used to something new on your teeth.

What is the best way to clean the aligners?

The aligners are best cleaned with an ordinary toothbrush and rinsed with lukewarm water. Brushing your teeth after every meal, before putting the aligners back in, is very important because it helps maintain proper oral hygiene. With traditional braces, oral hygiene is more difficult.

Can you smoke cigarettes while wearing the aligners?

Smoking cigarettes while wearing the aligners is not recommended, as it may cause stains or discolouration of the orthodontic aligners.

What does DIAMOND INVISALIGN® mean?

If you would like to treat your orthodontic problem with Invisalign® aligners, it is worth having them fitted at a Clinic with extensive experience. Dr Magdalena Rutkowska has achieved DIAMOND INVISALIGN® status, which means that in the last year she fitted Invisalign® braces for over 150 patients. On the invisalign.pl website, patients can find doctors certified by Invisalign®. The search engine lets you find your future orthodontist by place of residence and experience. Doctors’ experience is marked with symbols – in order: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond. This means that doctors with the least experience have Silver status, are usually just starting their adventure with Invisalign® and treat about 10-30 patients a year. Doctors marked as Diamond, the highest level, treat over 150 patients a year with the Invisalign® system.

In addition, Dr Magdalena Rutkowska has received the APEX award, which means she is among the 5% of doctors worldwide most experienced in Invisalign® treatment.

Preparing for Invisalign® treatment – standard impression vs. digital impression?

At our clinic we do not use traditional orthodontic impressions. Classic orthodontic impressions are three-dimensional replicas of the patient’s teeth and the soft tissues of the mouth. They are made using a special impression material which, once hardened, retains the exact shape of the teeth, gums and palate. At the Proste Zęby Clinic we only use digital impressions, i.e. ClinCheck®. It is a series of photographs.

How do I start Invisalign® treatment?

Book an initial consultation at our clinic. During the first visit, the so-called START-UP visit, in addition to the orthodontic consultation, photographs will be taken and, using 3D imaging technology, a visualisation of the teeth straightening is prepared – from the starting position to the final result that will be achieved at the end of treatment.

Does treatment with Invisalign® braces hurt?

We’ll be honest – any intervention in our body has certain consequences, including pain. Invisalign treatment has been designed to keep patient discomfort to a minimum. You should certainly expect the first 7 days of treatment to be an adaptation period. During this time we get used to wearing the aligners and speaking with them, and check that the aligners fit the dental arches well. During this time there may be pain, drooling or lisping. Nothing strange about that – we don’t normally wear anything on our teeth!

Pain may occur for 1-2 days after each change to new aligners. However, this discomfort is minor compared to metal braces. Invisalign makes the teeth move more often (once every 7-10 days) and to a lesser extent than metal braces. The wires of metal braces are adjusted by the orthodontist once a month/every few weeks, so the force exerted on the teeth is much greater than with Invisalign aligners, which causes pain.

You certainly don’t need to worry about drooling and lisping at the beginning. This is normal and goes away as soon as you get used to wearing the aligners. Any irritation caused by the aligners can be relieved with special orthodontic wax.

What is the minimum age of a patient who qualifies for Invisalign® treatment?

Thanks to their experience, the specialists at the Proste Zęby Clinic can use the Invisalign® system to straighten teeth in most adults, teenagers and children. Teenage patients can use the special Invisalign Teen® product, which was designed for children and teenagers and gives parents better control over aligner wear. For children, the Invisalign® First product is suitable.

Can you chew gum while wearing the aligners?

Chewing gum while wearing the aligners is not recommended, as it may stick to the aligners. It is recommended to remove the aligners before every meal or snack.

Is Invisalign® treatment available from any dentist or orthodontist?

Every orthodontist and dentist interested in treating patients with the Invisalign® system must complete appropriate training. It is important to choose an experienced doctor and an experienced Clinic that successfully uses the Invisalign® treatment system.

Does Invisalign® have EU certificates?

Yes, it has the European Union CE 0344 certificate. The Invisalign® system and Vivera® retainers by Align Technology® have been certified as a Class IIa medical device in the European Union. Align Technology® is the first company in the European Union to obtain an EC Class IIa certificate for clear aligners and retainers, which means that the design of the Invisalign® system and Vivera® retainers meets the general safety and performance requirements set out in COUNCIL DIRECTIVE 93/42/EEC and DIRECTIVE 2007/47/EC.

How should I take care of oral and aligner hygiene during treatment?

First of all, it is worth emphasising that taking care of both oral hygiene and the braces themselves is much easier with Invisalign than with metal braces. Invisalign aligners are removed for eating and drinking, as well as for brushing your teeth. Oral hygiene therefore does not change at all compared to before treatment. We brush our teeth with a toothbrush and toothpaste, floss the spaces between the teeth and rinse the mouth with a dedicated mouthwash. It is important to brush your teeth after eating, always before putting the aligners back in.

Daily hygiene of Invisalign aligners consists of rinsing them under running water and cleaning them with a toothbrush. We should do this every day, each time we put the braces on. If the aligners become dirty or discoloured, they can be cleaned with Invisalign cleaning crystals (included in the starter kit) or denture cleaning tablets. Soak the aligners in a glass for about 10 minutes.

How do I take the aligners out and put them in?

We teach each patient individually how to put on and take off the braces during the visit to the office. The aligners are put on starting from the front teeth to the back ones. They are removed by lifting the aligner from the inside, starting at the back, and moving towards the front teeth.

Remember that the aligners must be worn 20-22 hours a day for the treatment to produce the expected result. The aligners are replaced with new ones every 7-10 days, depending on the orthodontist’s recommendations. Always put new aligners on at night, and if they don’t fit, extend wearing the previous ones up to 14 days. New aligners must fit the teeth perfectly – if something sticks out or doesn’t go onto the dental arch, it means it is still too early for it.

How can treatment be monitored?

Treatment results are checked primarily during check-up visits at the Proste Zęby Clinic. However, we encourage all patients to install the Invisalign app on their phone, which has many uses. First of all, the app counts the time we spend without the aligners during the day (it is usually much longer than we think!). The calendar in the app counts down to the aligner change and reminds us when to put on new ones. The app also makes it easier to contact the doctor. We can use it to send photos so that the orthodontist can monitor changes on an ongoing basis. We log in to the app by scanning the QR code on the aligner packaging.

Can you drink while wearing the aligners?

Yes, above all water and other unsweetened drinks. If we want to drink something that contains sugar (including alcoholic drinks!), we take the aligners out every half hour, rinse them under running water and put them back in, so that sugar does not get under the aligner.

What should I do if an aligner gets damaged or an attachment falls off?

Contact the Proste Zęby Clinic as soon as possible, preferably by sending a text message to 730 730 798 with information about what happened, which attachment fell off and the number of the aligner you are wearing. We will book your next visit and instruct you on what to do in the following days.

If you have any more questions about the first weeks with Invisalign braces, we encourage you to read the materials on the Proste Zęby Clinic website and to contact our specialists directly.

Where are Invisalign® aligners manufactured?

There are two Align Technology® factories in the world that produce Invisalign® aligners. One factory is located in Mexico and produces aligners for North and South American countries. The other factory is located in Poland, in Wrocław. It produces aligners for European countries. That is why aligners can now be produced and shipped in a shorter time – about 7-10 days.

Why choose Invisalign® rather than other companies that make aligners?

There are now more companies offering aligner treatment on the orthodontic market. The Proste Zęby Clinic provides treatment ONLY with original Invisalign® aligners and does not use any substitutes. Why?

  • The original, flexible SmartTrack® material has proven non-toxicity, unlike other materials (other aligners)
  • The manufacturer is Align Technology®, an American technology company based in California (unlike other aligners made e.g. in China)
  • The longest on the market – over 25 years
  • The greatest experience – over 18 million patients
  • The largest database, enabling the greatest innovations
  • The largest development budget (Research & Development)
  • Production in Poland (ensuring fast delivery)
  • Virtual Care available – patient monitoring supported by artificial intelligence
  • Clinical trials are carried out on original Invisalign® aligners
